Perhaps you’re looking for tools to help you study and prepare for exams? GoConqr (formerly known as Exam Time) is a learning and networking tool for students and educators. GoConqr allows users to make flashcards, mindmaps, quizzes, notes, and slides to review concepts. Users can then choose to keep these resources private for their own use (or for their class’s use), or opt to share these resources to the larger GoConqr community.
By sharing resources, other CoConqr users can search and use these resources for their own purposes. GoConqr is designed to help users prepare for standardized tests (such as the SAT, ACT, and GRE) or to study subject-specific facts and content. This web-based tool is also available as a free application for iOS and android devices. [MMB]

There is much more involved in creating a quality video than having a shiny camera and knowing what buttons to push in your video editing software. Video editing is a craft that if not pursued with a level of efficiency can become time consuming and frustrating, when it should be enjoyable and rewarding. The purpose of this session will be to provide GOLD students with an introduction to many of the facets involved in capturing, editing, and exporting video. At the end of your time in this session you will have a basic familiarity with the workflow, challenges, and skills necessary to complete a quality video project.

The Global Open Data Index, an initiative of Open Knowledge International, is at once an index of government open data and an assessment of these indexes. As the site notes, “Each year, governments are making more data available in an open format.” The Global Open Data Index tracks whether these data are released in a way that is open and accessible to citizens, the media, and the generally curious.
The Index ranks countries based on the availability and accessibility of data across 13 categories (including Election Results, Government Spending, and Legislation), displaying the results in an easily navigated infographic and map. Visitors to the site may also view open datasets, when available, by following links on these graphs or by conducting a text search. This makes the Global Open Data Index an excellent one stop shop for national data. Country rankings are updated annually. [MMB]

Are you looking for new ways to engage students? SUNY Geneseo is piloting a trial of VoiceThread and needs your feedback.
VoiceThread is an interactive collaborative learning tool that can be used to enhance student engagement outside of the classroom or in online environments. With VoiceThread, instructors and/or students can create, share, and comment on images, PowerPoint presentations, videos, audio files, documents, and PDFs using microphone, webcam, text, phone, and audio-file upload. At SUNY Geneseo, VoiceThread is an external tool that integrates into myCourses.
VoiceThread can be used in many different ways to enhance classroom learning experiences. Use it for flipping instruction, discussions outside of class, critiquing work, remediation, or practicing language skills.

It’s tax season again… Unfortunately, real life isn’t as simple as advancing past “go” and collecting our $200. Instead, we’ll be dusting off our calculators and filling out those forms.

Introduced in 2005, Google Earth is a three-dimensional virtual globe overlaid with dynamic data layers that let you explore land, oceans, moon and stars. There’s even a tour guide option that will give you historical information about significant places and events.
Governments and businesses are using it to make decision for location based projects by analyzing geospatial information layered by topographic, demographic, traffic data, and the like. For example, the New York State Department of Transportation has developed a Traffic Data Viewer that uses data from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Database (a google earth application) to display published traffic data graphically. County administrators can use this resource to plan repaving efforts or an entrepreneur could use local traffic patterns to determine the best location to open up their new start-up.
Educators are using it extensively in many different disciplines and ways, such as understanding global development, selecting and visualizing field study sites, studying land-use law and to depict the locations of many of the disputes, visualizing historical events and issues like the Trans-Atlantic slave trade routes, the underground railroad, the abolishment of slavery in Great Britain, mapping field trip routes, analyzing communication systems and so much more.
Plus, the Google Earth community is a great place to find data and can be used to explore historic grave sites, find overlays and place-marks related to Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flooding in New Orleans, study locations of large airliner accidents, shipwrecks, World War I & II, and more.

Infographics have been around for centuries, from ancient cave paintings to modern subway maps to (probably the most recognizable infograph of all time) the Periodic Table published back in 1869.
Recently, infographics and info-art have gotten a second wind. Data visualization has have become a popular trend for folks who want to quickly and easily present complex information. It’s no wonder since we live in an age where data is being produced at exponential rates. In fact, Google executives estimate that every two days, we create as much data as we did between the “dawn of time through 2003.” Every two days! Much of this is generated from social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Four Square and the like.
The increasing number of easy-to-use tools available has also made it easier for those without a degree in design to generate creative infographics; and to share them with the masses via social media.
