Whitney Houston, 1963-2012

On Saturday, singer and actress, Whitney Houston was laid to rest in Newark, New Jersey. Daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, Whitney climbed instantly to fame in the 1980s after being discovered by music executive Clive Davis in 1983. Although not exhaustive, this list of accomplishments from the resolution in the House of Representatives (H.RES.555) speaks to the breadth of her accomplishments as a black woman, musician, and figure of popular culture.

Houston’s debut album released a string of No. 1 hits – including two of my own favorites, “The Greatest Love of All“, and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)”. Her career grew steadily through the 1990’s  and in 1992 she released the soundtrack to the movie: The Bodyguard, in which she costarred with Kevin Costner. It became one of the biggest selling albums of all time, is still the biggest selling motion picture soundtrack of all time and was voted Grammy-winning `Album of the Year’, and  of course, gave us Dolly Parton’s composition, “I Will Always Love You.” Here is a list of titles available here in Milne Library, but don’t forget that you can always order her other music through IDS.
