Students plagiarize for many reasons. While some are simply trying to get through a course as easily as possible, others procrastinate and panic, taking a few short cuts to get the assignment done. Some students think that text on a “group-developed” web page like Wikipedia does not have to be cited because it is “common knowledge” (not true!). Others genuinely do not understand how to paraphrase, quote, and cite properly.
In this workshop taught by librarians, students will:
discuss how copyright laws and plagiarism rules apply to using material from the web
learn how citing correctly can help avoid unintentional plagiarism
learn how to write a paragraph that successfully and clearly distinguishes paraphrases and quotes from original ideas and language
Classical music fans will want to check out the Juilliard Manuscripts Collection, a spectacular collection of very rare manuscripts. These documents were donated to the school in 2006 by Bruce Kovner, a business professional and philanthropist who served as chair of the board at Juilliard.
This collection includes engraved first editions of manuscripts by Johannes Sebastian Bach; an autographed letter from Ludwig van Beethoven; a copy of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony – with his own annotations – that may have been used in the symphony’s very first performance; and a signed holograph by Claude Debussy.
Visitors to this website can search for manuscripts by composer. In addition to the luminaries mentioned above, this collection contains manuscripts by Johannes Brahms, Aaron Copland, Dmitri Shostakovich, Richard Wagner, and more. Do you need a place to work on your bulletin boards or crafty projects?
I’m Caroll, a senior in Secondary Education here at SUNY Geneseo and Curator for Milne Library’s Imaginarium and I’m here to tell you that it’s a great place for you to work on those projects and meet with your group members. In the Imaginarium you will find: die-cut machine, die-cut shapes/forms, a guillotine paper cutter, as well as a table for creating lesson plans or working on projects. There are also materials for creating a project during the curator’s office hours:
The Imaginarium is open not only to education students, but also other members of the community. Both the Teacher Education Resource Center (TERC) and the Imaginarium are located across from each other in Milne’s lower level. The TERC area has fiction and non-fiction books for all grade levels. It also offers materials for lessons and other projects, such as videos, textbooks, manipulatives, puppets, among many other resources. We encourage that students take advantage of these two areas.

Determining a source’s worth is more complicated than identifying whether or not it is scholarly or popular. All types of sources–even those that are scholarly–can potentially host biased stances and/or flawed conclusions. Workshop attendees will be empowered to evaluate all of their sources beyond the surface-level, enhancing the quality of their own scholarship. Register to Vote in the General Election by Oct. 14
Unless you have been living under a rock, you probably have heard the political attacks going back and forth between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Yes, it’s that magical time that arrives every four years – the general election! The general election is held on November 8, 2016. In this election, United States Citizens vote for more than just the President of the United States, they also vote for senators, seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, and more. Regardless of your opinion of the candidates or political orientation, voting is a civic responsibility and the outcome has a great impact on our society.
Students may establish voting residency in the place they consider their principal home, whether that be their current school address or at another address (such as a guardian’s address) they consider their primary residence (Brennan Center, 2016). If you have not declared Geneseo as your primary residence on your voter registration, then you need to apply for an absentee voting ballot.

“Voters in New York must have an accepted reason to vote absentee, including the inability to vote in person due to physical disability or absence from the county in which one is registered (if a resident of New York City, then absence from the city), among others. Voters may submit their application for an absentee ballot by mail (postmarked) seven days before Election Day (2016: November 1) or in person by the end of the day before Election Day (2016: November 7). Completed ballots may be submitted in person by the close of polls on Election Day or by mail such that the ballot is postmarked by the day before the election (2016: November 7) and received within seven days of the election” (Brennan Center, 2016).
Experience a hands-on introduction to preparing books for publishing. Whether you are an aspiring writer, designer, or just curious, understanding the tools, methods and workflow in the publishing process is useful. This workshop will give an overview of the services available for publishing in print and online and some basic industry standards. Participants will then begin to prepare a manuscript for print and as an epub ebook. This session requires basic computer literacy and comfort with Microsoft Office. The Global Open Data Index, an initiative of Open Knowledge International, is at once an index of government open data and an assessment of these indexes. As the site notes, “Each year, governments are making more data available in an open format.” The Global Open Data Index tracks whether these data are released in a way that is open and accessible to citizens, the media, and the generally curious.
The Index ranks countries based on the availability and accessibility of data across 13 categories (including Election Results, Government Spending, and Legislation), displaying the results in an easily navigated infographic and map. Visitors to the site may also view open datasets, when available, by following links on these graphs or by conducting a text search. This makes the Global Open Data Index an excellent one stop shop for national data. Country rankings are updated annually. [MMB]
Find out how to use research management tools like Zotero to gather, organize and automatically create citations for research papers. In this workshop, you will learn about the options available and gain hands-on experience with one of these tools to capture, save and export citations into a word document in the citation style of your choice.
